Mia
Mia / F / 9Y / 20lbs / Toy Aussie Shepherd/ Fostered in Owen Sound
Mia is a sweet, affectionate girl who's learning that the world is a safe and loving place. This adorable pup came to us with little life experience—she'd never been on walks before and is still figuring out what it means to be a cherished family dog. While she's a bit unsure at first, once Mia bonds with you, she becomes your devoted shadow who just wants to be close to her people.
Mia's favourite place in the world? Right next to you! She's the ultimate cuddler who will climb onto your lap (or right on top of you if you're lying down) and shower you with kisses. When she's not cuddling, you'll find her perched on top of the couch like a little sentinel, keeping watch over her family. She's particularly smitten with older kids and gets absolutely thrilled when they come home from school. Bonus: she can howl on command, which makes for some hilarious family sing-alongs!
Mia is making great progress but is still learning some basics. She's working on:
-Leash manners (she gets excited and uncertain, sometimes running ahead then back to her person)
-Greeting strangers calmly (she barks initially but settles within 5-10 minutes)
-Building confidence in new situations
-She's crate trained but isn't a fan, she's doing well with house training but did have some accidents initially due to anxiety. These are already tapering off as she settles in. With patience and routine, she'll continue to improve.
Mia would thrive in a home where:
She's the only pet or if the other pet is ok with her getting most of the attention (she's a bit jealous and wants all the love for herself!)
She did previously live with cats
She has older kids (12+) to adore
Someone is home most of the day or can keep alone time under 5 hours
Her humans are patient and understanding as she continues building confidence
There's a cozy couch she can claim as her lookout spot
With low to medium energy, Mia is content with a 30-45 minute daily walk and potty breaks every few hours. The rest of the time, she's happy lounging around the house, napping, or gazing out the window.
She will need a dental within the next 12-18 months. She did have some skin irritation when she came into our care and is currently on apoquel, which has helped a lot. This is something she might need to stay on, or need intermittently (approx $100/month).
