Adoption Process

Interested in adopting one of our dogs?
The first step is to complete and online application. We will reach out to all applicants to let them know if they were successful in moving on to the next step, or not, within one week.

Your application was chosen as the best fit, now what?
A Second Chance volunteer will contact you to set up a phone interview. Please set aside approximately 60 minutes for this call. Come prepared with a list of questions that may you have for us! We want to get to know you and for you to get to know us!

Please ensure that all members of the household are present on this call (we want to get to know everyone).

As part of the initial interview process, we also contact personal, veterinarian and landlord references (if applicable), as well as conduct a virtual home visit.

Note: we require that existing dogs in the home have up-to-date preventative care and regular assessments by veterinary services as we expect that for any adopted dog. Vaccinations are expected except where a veterinary service has advised against doing so.

You aced the initial interview process and are a great fit for the dog, what’s next?

You will be connected with the foster parent to set up meet and greet with the dog. Resident dogs will be required to attend, as well as all members of your household. This will give you and your family a chance to interact with the dog and ask questions to the foster parent to ensure the dog is a great fit for you.

We will then review your completed application and make a final decision.

Approved adopters will then be asked to sign the adoption contract & submit the adoption fee, purchase your mandatory supplies and arrange a pick up day and time for your new dog.

Veterinary Care Before Adoption

All dogs will receive basic vet care before being adopted out. This includes ensuring they are up-to-date on vaccinations, they have been spayed or neutered, they have been microchipped and have been dewormed and treated for fleas.

Copies of these records will be shared with you when the adoption is completed so that you can forward them to your own veterinarian.

Please note: Second Chance cannot guarantee a dog’s temperament or health, but we will always share everything we know about the dog during the adoption process. We want this to be a successful adoption and a happy ending for the pup!
