Blanche

Blanche / F / 12Y / 14lbs / Shih Tzu / Fostered in Welland

Blanche is living proof that the best things in life are worth savoring slowly. This gentle senior girl has mastered the art of relaxation and brings a peaceful, calming presence to any home. She's the quietest dog you'll ever meet – she hasn't barked once in foster care – and spends most of her time contentedly snoozing on a cozy bed.

Blanche is independent, calm, and wonderfully low-key. She's the perfect companion for someone who appreciates a dog that doesn't demand constant attention but is always happy to be nearby. While she's not overly cuddly, she'll accept pets and cuddles when she's sleepy and relaxed. Her idea of a perfect day? Multiple naps, leisurely bathroom breaks, and of course, meals!

Let's be honest – Blanche's world revolves around FOOD. She is absolutely passionate about eating and will enthusiastically remind you when it's mealtime. She's food-motivated to the point of being brazen, so she needs to be fed separately from other pets and watched carefully around human food. If you're eating on the couch, she'll shamelessly try to help herself! This does mean she'll need an owner who can manage her diet and resist those pleading eyes, as she's working on maintaining a healthy weight for her little frame.

Blanche is 99.9% housetrained and does well either free-roaming or in her enclosure. She can be trusted alone for several hours and will likely greet you from her favourite sleeping spot when you return. She's excellent on leash but walks at her own leisurely pace – there's no rushing this girl! On rare, magical occasions, you might witness her adorable "zoomies" where she hops around like a rabbit for a few jumps before returning to her normal slow-motion speed.

Blanche is a senior with some hearing and vision impairments, and may be showing early signs of cognitive changes. She can sometimes wander aimlessly or get stuck in tight spaces, so a home with clear pathways is ideal. She has recently had a dental to remove many rotten teeth. She requires regular grooming to prevent matting and keep hair out of her eyes, and does best with gabapentin on board for grooming appointments. She also has some stiffness and luxating patellas, which is why maintaining her healthy weight is so important.

Blanche gets along wonderfully with calm, senior dogs – she's quite fond of her 35kg senior Lab mix foster brother! She's completely indifferent to cats and has shown only mild, slow-motion curiosity about rabbits and chickens before losing interest. High-energy dogs are not her cup of tea. She is good with kids 12+ and would love a family where someone is home often.
